We’re all used to modernized conveniences but very few of us are aware of the possible health risks that come with these state-of-the-art gadgets that make the world work.

Well, it turns out that our cellphones, microwaves, Wi-Fi routers, computers and other appliances all produce a stream of invisible energy waves that some experts are concerned about.

Should we be concerned?

Since the beginning of time, the sun has sent out waves that create electric and magnetic fields (EMFs) or radiation. While the sun sends out EMFs, we can see the energy radiating out which is visible light.

After electric power lines and indoor lighting spread across the world, scientists realized that the power lines supplying all that energy to the world were sending off EMFs, just like the sun does naturally.

Over the years, scientists learned that many appliances that use electricity cause EMFs like power lines do. Along with X-rays and some medical imagining procedures like MRIs.

Although scientists don’t generally think EMFs are a health concern or dangerous there are still some scientists that question exposure. Many say there hasn’t been enough research into understanding whether EMFs are safe.

EMFs cannot damage DNA or cells directly. Some scientists have speculated that ELF-EMFs could cause cancer and other health problems by reducing melatonin hormone level which regulates the sleep. Sleep is the most important aspect of healthy life. The new diagnosis of “ EMF Hypersensitivity Syndrome” is seen more frequently with one of the main symptom being insomnia.

Two Types of EMF Exposure

1. Low-level Radiation

Low-level radiation also known as, non-ionizing radiation. Mild and thought to be harmless on people. The appliances below are what send-off EMFs.

  • Microwave ovens
  • Computers
  • Cellphones
  • Bluetooth Devices
  • Power Lines
  • Wireless Routers
  • MRIs
  • House Energy Meters

2. Ionizing Radiation

The second type of radiation is called ionizing radiation (high-level radiation)

Examples are:

  • Ultraviolet light
  • X-rays

Symptoms of EMF Exposure

EMFs can affect your body’s nervous system function and cause damage to cells. Cancer and unusual growths may be the one of the symptoms from very high EMF exposure.

Other symptoms may include:

  • Sleep disturbances, including insomnia
  • Depression
  • Tiredness and fatigue
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Anxiety and restlessness
  • Nausea
  • Loss of appetite and weight loss
  • Changes in memory
  • Lack of concentration
  • Skin burning and tingling
  • Changes in an electroencephalogram (which measures electrical activity in the brain)

The symptoms of EMF exposure are vague and diagnosis from symptoms is highly unlikely.

How EMF Radiation from Electronics can Affect Children

As we all know, children’s bodies are much different than adults on a physical, chemical and biological level. This is because children are still developing and their hormones, enzymes, tissues and cellular responses to environmental toxins are all different from adults. This is why Electromagnetic Field (EMF) Radiation can have a profound effect on their bodies.

Early studies show that EMF from cell phones can penetrate the brain of a child much more so than that of adults. Probably due to the higher water content in children’s tissues.

In addition, EMF can do more damage over a larger area because cells are splitting and growing as a child matures. This can develop into permanent biological effects like ADHD, Autism and Obesity.

It’s important for educated parents to realize that cell phones may pose a danger in itself to their young ones, just because their bodies are still maturing, and the technology is still very new.

Protection from EMF Exposure

The data from different researchers provide conflicting results. Some studies show increased childhood leukemia and  brain tumor rate. Some others claim there is no link between cancer and EMF exposure. Since the evidence is inconsistent, the more research are needed especially for the long term health effect of EMF exposure.  Even a small increase in cancer risk would be very important considering how widespread exposure everyone gets in modern societies.

Since the harmful effect from even the environmental level exposure is a possibility, the public should follow the precautionary principle and limit their exposure as much as possible.

Keeping the distance between the source of EMF and the body is the best way to diminish its effect on the body.

You may also look into EMF protectors which are used to shield EMF and reduce exposure from electronic devices that send-off electromagnetic waves and 5G towers. The EMF protectors  are especially recommended for the babies and small children as they are the most vulnerable age group.
