{"id":17329,"date":"2016-01-30T17:16:03","date_gmt":"2016-01-30T22:16:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ucbaby.ca\/?p=17329"},"modified":"2023-10-15T18:12:41","modified_gmt":"2023-10-15T22:12:41","slug":"safe-sleep-for-baby","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ucbaby.ca\/zh-hans\/safe-sleep-for-baby","title":{"rendered":"Safe Sleep for Your Baby"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Creating a safe sleep environment for your baby will lower the\u00a0risk of\u00a0<strong>Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).<\/strong>\u00a0SIDS remains the leading cause of death of healthy babies from one month to one year old.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Most SIDS happen during sleep without any warning signs and is called\u00a0<strong>&#8220;crib death.&#8221;<\/strong>\u00a0Ensuring a safe sleep environment for babies can decrease the risk significantly, not only for SIDS but also for entrapment, suffocation and strangulation.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ucbaby.ca\/crib-safety-for-babies\">*The safest place for your baby to sleep is<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>in a crib, cradle or bassinet<\/strong>. Standard beds, water beds, air mattresses, couches, futons or armchairs are never safe for babies.<\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Position the baby to lie\u00a0on their\u00a0<strong>backs<\/strong>\u00a0when they sleep.<\/li>\n<li>Sharing the bed with a baby can be very dangerous. Health Canada\u00a0<strong>does not recommend<\/strong>\u00a0sharing your bed with the baby.<\/li>\n<li>Sharing the room with the baby is recommended for the first six months of the baby&#8217;s life. However, the <strong>baby should sleep in a crib<\/strong>, cradle, or bassinet <strong>within close accessibility<\/strong>\u00a0to the caregiver&#8217;s bed.<\/li>\n<li>Use only original parts from the manufacturers when you set up cribs and never modify the recommended setup instructions.<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ucbaby.ca\/crib-safety-for-babies\">\u00a0<strong>Follow the safety regulations for the cribs<\/strong>.<\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>Remove any type of cord<\/strong>\u00a0that is attached to the baby&#8217;s clothing which can cause strangulation.<\/li>\n<li>Use only\u00a0<strong>firm mattresses<\/strong>\u00a0without any gaps. Loose mattresses can cause suffocation.<\/li>\n<li>You can put twins into the same crib with following the same safety issues as for a single baby.<\/li>\n<li>Provide a<strong>\u00a0smoke-free environment<\/strong>\u00a0for the baby all the time. Smoking near the baby increases the risk of SIDS.<\/li>\n<li>Never let bigger kids share the same bed with the baby.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Do NOT leave any TOYS<\/strong>\u00a0or other items in the crib.<\/li>\n<li>Don&#8217;t use\u00a0<strong>baby hammocks<\/strong>\u00a0which have a higher rate of accidents.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Bumper pads and sleep positioners<\/strong>\u00a0are classified as\u00a0<strong>unsafe products\u00a0<\/strong>by Health Canada.<\/li>\n<li>Never leave\u00a0<strong>pacifier\/ soother<\/strong>\u00a0with hanging cords inside the crib.<\/li>\n<li>Don&#8217;t use\u00a0<strong>loose beddings, heavy blankets<\/strong>\u00a0and quilts in the crib.<\/li>\n<li>Wearing<strong>\u00a0one-piece sleepers<\/strong>\u00a0is better than using blankets for babies and toddlers. A baby&#8217;s head can get covered by blankets and may cause suffocation.<\/li>\n<li>If a blanket is needed, use a thin, light and\u00a0<strong>breathable\u00a0<\/strong>one.<\/li>\n<li>It is not recommended to allow the room to get too warm. It increases the risk for SIDS. Keep the\u00a0<strong>room temperature<\/strong>\u00a0at a comfortable level.<\/li>\n<li>Don&#8217;t keep the sleeping baby in car seats, swings, bouncers, slings or baby carriers.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Keep baby&#8217;s crib away<\/strong>\u00a0from cords on window blinds, shades and curtains.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Baby&#8217;s sleeping<\/strong>\u00a0area should not be close to windows, patio doors, lamps, candles, electrical plugs, corded baby monitors, extension cords and small objects.<\/li>\n<li>Do not leave the baby in a crib with a necklace, elastic band, scarf, or a pacifier with a long cord. These items could cause strangulation.<\/li>\n<li>When visiting family and friends, check the sleeping area of the baby for any hazardous items.
